Ruth Rikowski's 3rd News Update

Third News Update – Ruth Rikowski

Dear All:

Here is the Third News Update

1. Ruth Rikowski Updates

Ruth Rikowski has a new web log (or journal, as AOL calls it), called Ruth Rikowski Updates. You can see this at: http://journals.aol.co.uk/rikowskigr/ruth-rikowski-updates

It consists of these news updates that I am circulating, and focuses on my publications, talks and campaigns and events that I have been/am involved in.

2. Knowledge Management: Social, Cultural and Theoretical Perspectives, Edited by Ruth Rikowski Chandos Publishing: Oxford, 2007 978 1 84334 139 0 (pbk); 978 1 84334 189 5 (hdbk); 304pp. See: http://www.chandospublishing.com/catalogue/record_detail.php?recordID=67

I am hoping to hold a book launch for this book at London South Bank University in the not too distant future. I will inform readers once this has been finalized. Meanwhile, here is some further information about the book:

This book includes contributions from a variety of academics and professionals, looking at KM from different perspectives. The book is divided into 4 parts: Social, Economic, Political and Philosophical Perspectives; Practical Perspectives; Cultural Perspectives and Theoretical Perspectives.

There is a Foreword by Professor Deian Hopkin, Vice-Chancellor, London South Bank University. He says that the book:

“…embraces a range of issues, global and local, political and intellectual, and in the process raises a number of questions about the function and utility of the way we manage and disseminate knowledge. In the process it suggests an alternative agenda, one that commands real debate and discussion.”The opening chapter is by Professor Bruce Lloyd who considers what part wisdom has to play in KM. He says that:”…we appear to be spending more and more time focusing on learning knowledge, or more strictly information/facts, that have a short shelf-life, and less and less time on knowledge that overlaps with wisdom that has a long shelf-life.”The second chapter is by Bob Bater and Isabelle Cabos and examines intangible value at work. They endeavour:
“…to show how the growing importance of knowledge and other forms of intangible value is changing the dynamic interplay of relationships, both within and outside the world of work.”In the practical section, Mandy Webster considers the role of library in KM, whilst Paul Catherall looks at accessibility issues for web-based information systems.Ruth Rikowski focuses on a number of different areas in regard to KM and culture, including KM in the developing world and internal and external cultures and social culture. Dr Leburn Rose examines thermodynamics and KM in the theoretical section and says that:”The science of thermodynamics offers an intriguing and fresh perspective for understanding the nature and scope of knowledge management in organisations.”Then in the final chapter Ruth Rikowski outlines an Open Marxist theoretical analysis of KM, showing how value is extracted from intellectual labour in the knowledge revolution. She concludes by emphasising that:”We should try to use KM, and in particular, our knowledge and intellect in general, in a different way…in a way that will help to liberate labour rather than exploit it further.”The book includes a bibliography and an index.
